Christmas in Israel

Even though the Christmas story took place in Israel only 2.5% of people in Israel celebrate Christmas. If you go to Jerusalem you probably won’t see many signs of Christmas. They have Hanukkah instead of Christmas on the evening of December 22 to the evening of December 30th. In Israel there are no public holidays for Hanukkah either. The only place Christmas is celebrated in Israel is at Christian churches. At the churches they have services, activities, and they sing carols. Nazareth is where Jesus grew up and is the largest Christian population in Israel. They have a Christmas Eve parade, and lots of decorations and lights on the streets. The parade represents the journey that Mary and Joseph took in the Christmas story. Then they have a firework festival and a midnight mass service.

Family Traditions

We have tones of family traditions . One of our traditions is that we do an advent calendar ever year 25 days before Christmas. My mom and me go to Walmart and buy the advent calendar. Every morning we wake up and eat our chocolate from the advent calendar. On Christmas day we usually get a kinder egg from the chocolate advent calendar. When my brother opens the kinder egg he goes bonkers! Once he eats it he get’s very hyper and crazy. That is one out of many of our family traditions!
